Winchester Photographic Society
Centenary Photo Project
Winchester Photographic Society was formed in 1923 by a small group of business men who were enthusiastic photographers. The Society was officially opened in October of that year by the Headmaster of Winchester College Dr M.J.Rendall. In 1923 meetings were held at Gudeons in Southgate Street later moving to The Science Lecture Hut in Winchester College by kind permission of the Headmaster, who was the President at the time. The Society then moved to Jewry Street then back to Gudeons later in 1927 and into the early 1930's. The meetings then moved to St.Patrick's Hall in St Clements Street until WWII when the Society closed down. The Society reformed in 1946 in the Banqueting Hall of the Winchester Guildhall and since then has had homes in the Conservative Club, the Winchester Public Library, Peter Symonds College until moving to its current home, The Discovery Centre, now named the Arc, from 2008. The Society has grown from those early years into one of the largest in the South of England with over 150 members.
